Superintendent Jim Acklin said any type of litigation against the school district for allegations that a coach had inappropriate relationships with two students could be months, if not years away.
According to Urbana Attorney Tom Bruno, his client, a 19-year-old college student from St. Joseph, is considering a lawsuit against the school district for damages resulting from coach Jon Jamison allegedly inappropriately touching her while she was a high school student.
Acklin said he has not heard from Bruno since Bruno spoke to the media about the situation earlier this week.
“Maybe he’s rethinking the fire storm he created,” Acklin said. “If his objective was to turn the community against the school that blew up in his face.”
Acklin said he has spoken to the school’s insurance company which said that if a lawsuit is filed they will have the final say on whether to fight the lawsuit in court or settle.
“In a way, it’s a relief because I don’t have to make decisions on something I have little expertise in,” he said.
Acklin said he has heard nothing but supportive comments from people within the district, other superintendents, former teammates and former athletes about how the district is handling the situation.
“The community has rallied around the school,” he said. “I won’t say I’m surprised at the community’s reaction but I told my wife last night that you don’t know the level of support you have until the chips are really down.”
