Dalton directs first show at SJO

That’s how many theater productions Chandler Dalton has worked on counting her current production of “Fairy Tale Courtroom.”
In short, the new St. Joseph-Ogden drama director is a veteran of the theater.
“The kids were really shocked when I told them that,” Dalton said.
Dalton, who took over for retiring drama director Larry Williams became interested in drama in junior high when she joined the speech team.  That interest grew when she got into high school.
After graduation she got involved with  theatre at Parkland and then into community theatre.
Dalton said her favorite aspect of direction is getting to see her vision come to life and seeing the kids having fun while performing.
“I was the student director while I was at SJO so I guess that kind of prepared me for what I am doing now,” she said. “I really like being able to do both the acting and the technical side to theatre while at SJO. It really prepared me for not only this job but it also prepared me for working in community theatre.”
Dalton, who worked closely with Williams the past few years, said the biggest change for her is realizing she is in charge.
“I have gotten so used to having Larry call the shots and guiding me that being the one that the kids go to and telling them what we are doing each day has been a big adjustment,” she said. “One of the biggest challenges I have faced is trying to figure out how everything is supposed to work. Who I am supposed to go to for problems or getting things purchased. Larry always told me that he was a text message away and I have definitely asked him a bunch of questions.”
Dalton said the most rewarding aspect of her job is seeing the kids grow as actors and watching their excitement grow as the performance approaches.
“Getting to see them smile and laugh makes me really happy,” she said.
The play is a comedy that features well known fairy tales as court cases. They include the Big Bad Wolf, the Wicked Witch of the West and Hansel and Gretel.
“I picked this show because we were due to have a comedy fall play,” Dalton said. “I had seen this production done a couple of years ago and I fell in love with it. It is a really cute play and is really funny.”
