SJO discusses greenhouse

St. Joseph-Ogden High School could be getting a greenhouse.

The project was first proposed in October 2017 when the Agriculture teachers, William Billman and Katie Duitsman, presented their curriculum update to the St. Joseph-Ogden Board of Education.

At the October meeting, Duitsman and Billman suggested that a horticulture class be offered a dual credit and also told the board that SJO was the only school in the area without a greenhouse.

Duitsman presented the board with a information on her ideal greenhouse. The cost for the greenhouse she proposed was $123,000 which did not include site preparation or utilities.

Duitsman said that a greenhouse would be good for the agriculture department as well as science and life skills classes.

Principal Gary Page told the board the only thing that was keeping the district from offering horticulture as a dual credit class with Parkland was the lack of a greenhouse.

At the November meeting Chris Kirschner from Conley’s Greenhouse Manufacturing & Sales was present.

Kirschner provided the board with information on a Gable 7500 Series Greenhouse.

Kirschner said the likely price range for the greenhouse was $145,000 - $210,000 depending on the options that were chosen and the cost of the site preparation.

Superintendent Brian Brooks said the project is still in the planning stages but the district does plan to move forward with it.

He said the project will be put out to bid.

“We have added some things,” he said. “We are willing to spend a little bit more to do it right.”

Brooks said the greenhouse would be located on the south lawn near the Ag shop.

“We want it to be greenhouse that the school and the district can be proud of,” he said. “It will all be paid for with sales tax money.”

During the January meeting Brooks said the project was on schedule to be brought to the board in March for approval with an estimated Aug. 1 completion date.
