Students compete in Science and Engineering contest

Thirty St. Joseph-Ogden High School students showed their smarts in the Worldwide Youth in Science and Engineering Regional this past weekend at Parkland College.
The contest is directed towards English and Science, said advisor Bob Glazier.
Glazier said the kids that participate in the contest are self- motivated.
“We don’t spend a lot ofttimes preparing for this as a group,” he said. “I have practice material they can request to work on.”
Glazier said they run the practice for the contest this way because the kids at St. Joseph-Ogden are just so busy.
“The kids have so much to do after school with practices or work that I don’t want to force them to practice this,” he said. “We are very laid back with it.”
The contest covers topics in math, physics, biology, chemistry, English, computer science and engineering graphics.
“We have been doing this for as long as I can remember,” Glazier said. “We do pretty well.  We seem to send at least one student to the state competition every year.”
Glazier said on the day of the contest students took two tests with a 15 minute break between the two tests. If they place first or second in their category they will advance to sectionals at Eastern Illinois University.
