Parks and recreation wants people to use parks

Parks and Recreation Director Victoria Becker wants people to enjoy the St. Joseph Parks.

To encourage that Becker is planning numerous events in a variety of parks in St. Joseph.

In April, Becker organized the St. Joseph Easter Egg Hunt in Crestwood Park.

In June Becker scheduled a community band concert in Kolb Park.

Next month, Woodard Park will play host to bluegrass band High Cotton.

"I'm trying to get every body out to promote the parks," Becker said during the June 24 St. Joseph Village Board meeting.

In addition to summer concerts, Becker also helped plan the June Summer Fling held in downtown St. Joseph.

Becker said the village wanted the event to be kid friendly and included many events with children in mind, including relay races, water balloon games and a petting zoo.

In other news, the village will be meeting with the Champaign County Sheriff's Office to discuss the village's contract for deputy coverage. The village contracts with the department to have a deputy in St. Joseph eight hours a day.

"The Sheriff has said the fees are going to go up but they are not going to be that big of a deal," said Health and Safety Committee Chair Andy Gherna. "Really we are just trying to get the contract finalized at this point."

The department has proposed a three-year contract with a 2.7 percent increase per year, Mayor B.J. Hackler said.

The finalized contract will be reviewed by Village Attorney Joe Lierman and voted on at a future meeting.

Also at the meeting, Streets and Alley's chairman Forrest Chism said repair work on the sinkhole on the Sidney slab will start soon.

The project will cost $3,775 and will come out of the drainage fund. Repairs will be completed by Duce Construction.
