SJO's Riley Baker sets school record in the 300-meter hurdles at Mahomet-Seymour invite, Spartans finish 7th as a team in event.

With the boys’ Class 1A sectional for track and field just mere days away, the SJO Spartans completed their regular season on Saturday with a seventh-place showing at the Mahomet-Seymour Invitational.  Although there were several notable performances for the SJO athletes, one stands out in front of all the others.

Senior Riley Baker set an SJO school record in the 300-meter hurdles by winning the event at Mahomet in a time of 39.16.  The old record was 39.24, shared by Neal Garrison at the Area All-Star Meet in 1991, and Ryan Jones, who tied the mark by Garrison at the Class 1A State Prelims at O’Brien Stadium in Charleston in 1998.

Dwight Colvin finished sixth overall in the 100 meters with a time of 11.97, while in the 200 meters, Baker set a personal best for him with a time of 23.17, good for second place overall.

In the distance races, Braden Pridemore finished fourth in the 1600 meters with a time of 4:38.30, a season best for him, while in the 3200 meters, freshman Brandon Mattsey earned a 10th place finish with a time of 11:10.41.

In the relay events, the Spartans finished in the top eight in all four events, with a third-place finish in the 4 x 100 relay, ending with a time of 44.73 from the team of Colvin, Baker, Brady Buss and Kaleb Harshbarger.  The 4 x 200 relay team, consisting of Harshbarger, Nathan Emmert, John Acklin and Andrew McDermott, finished seventh with a time of 1:37.80, while the 4 x 400 team, comprised of Buss, Colvin, Lane Gaskin and Mitchell Thompsen, finished 8th overall with a time of 3:39.28.

In the 4 x 800 relay, the team of Pridemore, Wyatt Wolfersberger, Lukas Hutcherson and Eric Poe garnered a fifth-place finish with a time of 9:01.30.  In the field events, two individual performances produced top eight finishes with freshman Hayden Knott finishing 8th in the discus, as he threw 123 feet, 3 inches.  In the pole vault, sophomore Nolan Peacock finished seventh overall with a leap of 11’6”.

The Spartans will play host to the Class 1A IHSA Sectional meet, which will be held on Friday afternoon.  The boys will try to qualify multiple events for the state meet, which will be held in Charleston on May 24-26.
