SJO boys track and field qualify six events for this week's IHSA State Finals in Charleston.

The St. Joseph-Ogden boys’ track and field team hosted the IHSA Class 1A Sectional meet on Friday in St. Joseph, and there are several Spartan athletes that will be moving on after qualifying for the state final preliminaries this coming Thursday at O’Brien Stadium in Charleston on the campus of Eastern Illinois University.

SJO qualified two relays into Thursday’s prelims, with the 4 x 100 and 4 x 400 relays, both manned by Riley Baker, Brady Buss, Joel Branson and Dwight Colvin.  In the 4 x 100, the Spartans finished second in the sectional with a time of 44.06, which was good enough to move on.

The 4 x 400 relay finished fourth, finishing in a time of 3:32.95, which also was within the window for qualification for the state prelims.

Freshman Hayden Knott also qualified in the discus, as he has been steady all season for the Spartans.  Knott gave the discus a toss of 139 feet, one inch to earn a trip to Charleston to compete against the state’s best, while in the 300 intermediate hurdles, Riley Baker, who already is running on two relay teams in the prelims, smashed his school record with a time of 38.87, giving him a good chance of advancing on to Saturday.

In the 1600 meters, Braden Pridemore won his event, finishing in a time of 4:32.55, and finally, in the 3200 meters, Wyatt Wolfersberger finished third, crossing the line in 9:59.78.

As a team, SJO finished third in the sectional, accumulating 73 points.
