The Heritage Hawks girl’s basketball team finished up the holiday tournament at Okaw Valley with a 1-2 record, with seniors Mary Happ and Dallas McCormick coming up big in their last three games of the 2012 year.
The Hawks took on Heyworth in a 58-40 loss, then turned around and handed Blue Ridge a 50-21 loss the next day. The last game of the tournament put Heritage against Teutopolis junior varsity in a tough 54-25 loss for the Hawks.
On Dec. 27, the 9-5 Hawks faced off against the Heyworth Hornets in a tough loss. The Hawks started out strong but couldn’t quite outscore the Hornets in the first quarter. Going into the second quarter, the Hawks trailed 16-14. Heritage struggled at the end of the first half, ending it with a score of 28-20 in favor of the Hornets.
The third quarter found the Hawks on the losing end again, going into the fourth quarter trailing by 11 points. The Hornets outscored the Hawks once again in the final quarter and finished the game with a 58-40 final score, handing the Hawks their sixth loss of the season.
Happ led the Hawks with 15 points, and junior Desirae Westerfield pulled down eight rebounds for the team.
The next day Heritage took on Blue Ridge in their second game of their three-game week. The Hawks took a strong 22-12 lead in the first quarter and maintained that lead throughout the game. Heritage’s defense shut down the Knights’ offense in the second quarter, keeping them to only two points and finishing the first half with a score of 39-14.
The second half was low scoring for both teams, with Heritage scoring 11 points and Blue Ridge only seven the whole half. The Hawks went into the fourth quarter with a 29-point lead and maintained that lead, as both teams only put up four points each in the final quarter.
In the 50-21 victory for Heritage, Happ once again led the team with 18 points and 10 steals. McCormick also came up big for the Hawks with 15 points and four steals.
On December 29, the Hawks went up against the Teutopolis junior varsity team in their final game for the 2012 year.
A combination of struggling offense for Heritage and strong defense for Teutopolis kept the Hawks to only 25 points the whole game.
In the first half, Teutopolis outscored Heritage 24-11 and took that strong lead into the locker room.
Teutopolis kept the Hawks from finding the net too much, outscoring them 30-16 in the second half. The final score of 54-25 handed Heritage their second loss of the tournament and their seventh of the season.
Happ came out on top for the Hawks again, putting up 10 points in the game.
McCormick added another nine points, combining with Happ to score over half of Heritage’s total points.
The Hawks go into the new year with a 10-7 record, and took on Martinsville at home on Jan. 3.
On Jan. 10, Heritage will travel to Tri-County to compete with only five regular season games and one tournament left to play this year.
