SJO cruises in opening round of the Class 2A Regional; Trimble reaches milestone in win.

The postseason is off and running for the St. Joseph-Ogden Lady Spartans, who began their quest on Tuesday night with a comfortable 50-25 win over the Argenta-Oreana Bombers in a semifinal matchup at the High School of St. Thomas More in Champaign.

Led by Bree Trimble’s 19 points, the Lady Spartans led early and often, and never trailed in the game, leading 17-6 after one quarter of play and taking a commanding 33-15 lead into the halftime locker room.  Defense was the name of the game for the Spartans, who forced 27 Argenta-Oreana turnovers on the night, but according to SJO head coach Kevin Taylor, his team could have played better.

“I thought we played hard tonight, but didn’t play as clean or efficient as we are capable of.  A lot of the turnovers that we caused were given right back on the other end of the floor, and that needs to be rectified before Thursday night”, Taylor said following the game on his team’s overall effort against the Bombers.

Trimble, who surpassed the 1,000-point mark with her 19 points, becomes the second person in her family to eclipse that mark (brother Brandon had over 2,000 points during his SJO career, graduating in 2017). After the game, Trimble talked about her accomplishment and how she didn’t let it affect the way she played.

“I knew I was close coming in, because my grandpa told me that I almost there, but I wanted to come out and play my game, not focusing on it.  If I got there tonight, that was fine, but I didn’t let it bog me down because I knew it would come eventually”, Trimble remarked after the game on the milestone point total.

Peyton Crowe added 13 for the Spartans (19-8), while Hannah Dukeman chipped in 8 points.  SJO shot 18-42 (43%) from the field, but struggled from beyond the arc, going 0-9 from long range.  However, the Spartans were effective from the foul line, making 14-20 (70%) from the stripe.

Argenta-Oreana, who sees their season end at 11-17, was led in scoring by Gabrielle Williams, who had 10 points.  Camilyn Newbanks added 6 points, while Maggie Millington chipped in 4 points for the Bombers, who shot 8-27 (30%) from the field, and struggled from the free throw line, making just 6 of their 13 attempts.

SJO advances to the championship game of the regional, and will face the host Sabers on Thursday evening.  St. Thomas More defeated Heyworth in the second semifinal game 45-35, and the regional title game will be a rematch of a game played back in December of 2017, with the Spartans winning by a score of 62-57 in an Illini Prairie Conference game.  Game time on Thursday evening is set for 7:00 on the north side of Champaign.
