Spartans go 3-3 in invite

For The Leader

Santa’s busy night is Christmas Eve.

The St. Joseph-Ogden wrestlers had an equally busy day just a couple days later.

The Spartan matmen competed in the 33-team St. Thomas More New Year’s Challenge at Huff Hall.
The Spartans wrestled six times in two days, including five matches on Friday.

SJO went 3-3 but didn’t place in the invite.

SJO defeated Monmouth 43-42 on criteria, Taylor Ridge Rockridge 48-36 and Clinton 41-33 but fell to third-ranked Wilmington 71-6, Clifton Central 38-33 and IVC-Chillicothe 40-34 on Saturday.

But just like Santa, there were presents for the Spartans as 170-pounder Austin Upton won his 100th career match. Upton finished the invite 5-1, including three wins wrestling up a weight class.

Austin Hedrick was the only Spartan wrestler to record a victory against Wilmington, pinning Nick Hawkins in one minute and 10 seconds at 152 pounds. Hedrick was undefeated for the invite, winning all six matches by fall.

Against Monmouth, Addison Chism, David Trewyn, Matthew Knipfer, Ty Waller, Hedrick, Gunnar Meeker and Upton all recorded wins.
Against Clifton Central, Chism, Trewyn, Hedrick, Meeker, Upton and Orion Ciota were all winners.

Corbin Wolken, Trewyn, Gage Haga, Skyler Pumphrey, Hedrick, Upton, Ciota and Ryan Koss had victories against Taylor Ridge.  Trewyn, Pumphrey, Hedrick, Meeker, Upton and Koss all won against IVC.
